Pump Problems?
The pump circulates hot water from the heat exchanger through:
- Radiators
- Pipework
- Hot water cylinders (on system boilers)
Without proper circulation, heat cannot transfer efficiently.
You might see:
- Cold radiators despite boiler firing
- Loud humming or grinding noise
- Boiler overheating or locking out
- Pump running constantly
- No heat reaching upper floors
Once a valve has lifted and debris gets trapped on the seat, it rarely reseals properly. That’s why repeated pressure loss is often a sign the PRV itself needs replacing.
Typical causes include:
- Sludge & debris – Build-up restricts movement and strains the motor.
- Airlocks – Air trapped inside the pump can prevent circulation.
- Worn bearings – Leads to noise and eventual failure.
- Electrical faults – No power supply or failed internal components.
- Incorrect speed setting
- Too low = poor circulation.
- Too high = unnecessary strain and noise.
Consider checking:
- Is the pump seized or just airlocked?
- Can the speed setting be adjusted?
- Is the system heavily contaminated
- The motor has failed
- The pump is overheating repeatedly
- There’s persistent noise from worn components
